Professional bio

Rajendra Akerkar is professor (/senior researcher) of Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) at Western Norway Research Institute (Vestlandsforsking), Norway, where his primary domain of research is semantic technologies with aim to combine strong theoretical results with high impact practical results. He also holds visiting academic assignments in India and abroad. In 1997, he founded and chaired the Technomathematics Research Foundation (TMRF) in India. As founder of TMRF, he is instrumental in ensuring that the Foundation  lends a platform for research exchange. He serves as an IT expert for many government/non-government agencies, including the European Commission, as expert evaluator of proposals and reviewer of running major funded projects. He also serves as an advisor to the company CCM Software

He spent the decade 1996-2006 in artificial intelligence and machine learning related research and teaching in India.  During that time, he was professor and head of computer science department at Chh. Shahu Central Institute of Business Education & Research. His research and teaching experience includes over 23 years in the Academia spanning different universities in Asia, Europe and North America. His current research agenda basically concentrates on learning and language --- how each works in the human and how they can be replicated in a machine.

He received DAAD fellowship in 1990 and also received prestigious BOYSCASTS Young Scientist award of Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, in 1997. From
1998 – 2001, he was UNESCO-TWAS associate member at Hanoi Institute of Mathematics, Vietnam. He was also DAAD visiting professor at Universität des Saarlandes and University of Bonn, Germany in 2000 and 2007 respectively.

In 2004, he started the International Journal of Computer Science & Applications (IJCSA), which has now become the premier open access publication in the field of computer science. He also serves as an Associate Editor of International Journal of Metadata, Semantics and Ontologies  (IJMSO). He
is co-organiser of several workshops, programme chair of international conferences ISACA, ISAI, ICAAI and WIMS. Rajendra also serves as the scientific committee member of many reputed international conferences and he is on the editorial board of international journals in bio-inspired computing, web services, artificial intelligence and ICT. He has co-authored 13 books, around 100 research papers, co-edited 2 e-Books and edited 5 volumes of international conferences. In 2013, He has edited a comprehensive reference book on 'Big Data Computing'. He is also actively involved in several international ICT initiatives, and research & development projects for more than 16 years. In 2010, he initiated world wide network on Web Intelligence, Mining and Semantics.
